As the Committee continue to make preparations for the next West Show, we look back on some of the key moments that took place in 2024, including some of the news we published and what featured at the annual summer show.
New President
Andre Mayor was elected the new President of the West Show at the 2024 Annual General Meeting.
Andre worked as a Show Manager and, prior to being elected to his new role, as a Vice-President on the Committee.
Extra competition classes
The Committee introduced the following to the Schedule of Exhibit Classes for 2024, for exhibitors to enter as part of the show’s competitions.
- Juniors – A Loaf of Bread
- Juniors – Victoria Sandwich
- Fruit – Five Apples, cidar
- Preserves & Dairy Produce – Vinegar
- Cakes & Baking – Banana Bread
Supporting spring planted bulbs in St Saviours
The West United A. & H. Society supported community group Floral St Saviours by donating funds towards the planting of spring bulbs in the parish.
These bulbs were planted in several locations including St Saviours’ parish church and St Apolline’s chapel.
The tulips are cut down once they have flowered and they come up again year after year.
Honorary Vice-President awarded MBE
Honorary Vice-President Jurat David Robilliard was made a Member of the British Empire (MBE) in the King’s Birthday Honours 2024 for his services to the church and to the Bailiwick of Guernsey.
David has been associated with the West Show for over 50 years. Prior to his current position as an Honorary Vice-President, he served on the organising committee as an Assistant Treasurer, Treasurer and also Vice-President.
He has also held various positions within the States of Guernsey including as Principal Officer of the States Assembly and Constitution Committee, Her Majesty’s Deputy Greffier, and Secretary to the Bailiff of Guernsey.
As a Churchwarden for Torteval Parish Church, 2024 marked 52 years of his unbroken service on the Deanery Synod.
Our Entertainment for 2024
This year, the West Show had another fantastic line-up of entertainment which was watched by over 10,000 visitors across both days.
OG Performance Horses
Spanish stallions, high school dressage, airs above the ground and gravity defying tricks. This equestrian performance team showcased their splendid high adrenaline spectacle and left the public in awe.
M.A.D. Team
The UK’s number 1 mountain bike aerial display team showed off some amazing trick and skills. M.A.D. Team include some of the UK’s top riders, including former World and British Champions, performing their best flips, spins, hops and balancing tricks.
Madness Trampoline Wall
If you visited the West Show thinking trampolining isn’t for adults, you were wrong. Madness Events were back with their new fun and jaw dropping trampoline wall stunt show which was loved by both children and adults.
This was Madness Events’ second attendance at the West Show. The performed in 2022 with their parkour show.
Peter Leadbeater Chainsaw Carving
Peter Leadbeater is an experienced chainsaw carver who’s been creating wood sculptures for over 14 years and has taken part is several large chainsaw carving competitions. He demonstrated his artistic skill at the West Show creating a variety of sculptures, many of which were available to the public to keep.
Live Music in the Beer Tent
Two new bands performed in the Beer Tent for the first time this year.
Local band Neon Fire opened Wednesday night with 90’s Brit pop anthems and indie rock n roll. Ruby Rouge travelled from neighbouring Channel Island, Jersey, to perform first on Thursday night.
Stuck to the Ceiling, Underdog and Last of the Light Brigade returned by popular demand.
